I learnt a lot about the specifics of pronunciation when speaking the English language. We speak naturally without considering which word to stress in a sentence, according to our needs (for somebody to listen, or answer a question for example.) When teaching students I should demonstrate ways a sentence can change meaning depending on where the stressed words are, as well as the intonation, the general tone pattern of a sentence.
When I was learning Thai it did help when my teach demonstrated with her lips exact position for the correct sound, as well as using a hand to check for flow of air or not. Diagrams are also useful - so these techniques can be used with students, and as different people have different methods of best learning, a variety of techniques should be used during a lesson.
The phonemic alphabet was very interesting to learn - having seen it before in the dictionary but not yet taken the time to interpret those unfamiliar letters. I enjoyed translating the passage and questions on the test.
I also learnt about articulation, the parts of our body that we use when speaking - not just the mouth, but the throat and nose also - and how we form different sounds with each part.
