The English language can be better understood if the words are categorized into groups. Once the words are in groups a student can start to form an equation for a sentence. For example, the sentence "The dog is red" can be seen as Article + Noun + Verb + Adjective. This thought process may help students view the sentence structure in a new way and create new sentences. A good way to teach these parts of speech may be with an activity with Mad Libs. They require a knowledge of parts of speech, offer an opportunity for students to work in small groups, and they often turn out funny keeping students interested in the lesson.
