Boston, KwaZulu Natal TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I have learned about various teaching aids and equipment and the ways that they can be used. Several of these are OHPs (overhead projectors), chalk board or white board, a computer, VHS/DVDs/video clips, CDs/cassettes/podcasts/mp3s, visual aids (pictures), dictionaries, video cameras/smartphones, course books, resource books, online media/dictionaries/student resources, worksheets, etc.
All of these items are useful for certain teaching methods. For example, worksheets are great for the study phase of a lesson and can provide good feedback to students by reviewing the worksheet after the students have completed it. Overhead projectors are useful because as a teacher you spend a lot less time with your back to the students and also it helps focus a students attention. OHPs can be used to reveal developments with grammar and vocabulary. Dictionaries are useful for students because they can look up the pronunciation, definition and usage of a word, as well and producing language. English to English dictionaries are much more preferred in class than a dictionary that translates from the students' native language. Resource book are useful in supplementing, replacing or adapting course work, and most schools have a few of them available.
It is important to understand all of the different teaching aids and equipment available because it can help to create a more interesting and varied learning experience for students, as well as allow a teacher to more easily adapt to the resources a school may have, whether there are many or only a few teaching aids available.
