In this unit I was introduced to the methodologies of teaching foreign languages. As I study foreign language education, I had heard of most of these before. What was new to me was Suggestopaedia and ESA. Interestingly enough though, I have seen a Suggestopaedia lesson in action. In my first year of college, I was required to observe in foreign language classrooms. I observed a middle school German teacher, who would play music in class in exactly the way described and would also give the student's new names. In conversations with her she would emphasize the importance of overcoming, to the best of our abilities, the effective filter. I did not realize that this was a widely spread teaching methodology. She did use another methodology at the same time (Comprehensible Input while also using Storytelling and One Word Images). I truly think that upon seeing the level of proficiency her students had reached after one year of study, I do think that Suggestopaedia is something I might look to use in combination with ESA. I actually already structured most of my lessons in this way, but usually using different kinds of activities than those listed. Something I found particularly useful in this unit was the section on corrections, as I often find myself trying to balance between too much and too little correction.
