This unit involved the basics of teaching receptive skills, reading and listening. The reason for reading and listening can be either for a purpose (for example, reading instructions before completing a task), entertainment (for pleasure or enjoyment), or both. There are different ways we read and listen as well; for example, to predict, scan for information, skim for information, deduce information from context, or understand detailed information. The purpose for reading or listening in a given scenario will often dictate how an individual reads or listens. For example, if a person is reading an article to answer a series of questions, they would want to read for detailed understanding. To make reading or listening engaging to a language learner, the teacher should focus on selecting texts appropriate to the background and skill level of the class. Pre-teaching particularly difficult language and structures can also be a helpful tool in this regard but should not be overdone.
