Writing English is definitely difficult to learn because it is spelled often so diffenrent then spoken out. I can imagine that it is something you really have to motivate the students to do it. Specially when they are still young. In my own experience games can help a lot with this. Reading of course is also a good way to learn how to write the words. But with reading it is the same. The motivation has to be there for the students.
