There are different ways of evaluating student's level and their progress during the course. There are also external exams that a teacher need to prepare his students for. The Unit 15 describes different types of testing and common exams.
To assess a student's language level we can use tutorials, evaluation by the students or tests. Tutorials can be taken with the group or individually. Usually they are done in the end of the week reviewing the accomplished work and discussing the problems, the tasks and the aims of the lessons.
Evaluation by the students is a useful way of receiving the feedback about the course from the students by giving them a questionnaire or through guided discussion. It allows teacher to listen to the needs of his students and readjust his future lessons. This can be done in students' native language.
Tests are to be given at different stages in a course. A placement test is given at the start to place students into the correct class according to their knowledge and language abilities. A diagnostic test is also given at the start of the course to help understand what students already know and what they don't. Periodic tests are given multiple times during the course (every week, month, term) to give the information as to how the students are progressing. There are evaluations tests given in the end of the course such as an achievement test conducted in the school at the end of the year, a proficiency test and external examinations offered by third party organisations. The most common external examinations are described in the end of the Unit.
