There are four major basic skills when learning a language: speaking, writing, listening and reading. this unit especially covered on receptive skills - speaking and writing. From my experience some students for example pay more attention to writing and a bit of listening in order for them to pass exams.
its a little worrying knowing that they can write so well or just pass the exams but not so good at speaking or neither good at listening.
From my point of view all the four aspects are important. Using alphabets when it comes to writing also kinda simplifies things rather than other languages like arabic or Chinese or Japanese. this could be a plus cos in Chinese for example if u miss one stroke that word is wrong or it means something different.
