Unit 5 covers a number of teaching themes applicable to a wide range of contexts and situations. This unit covers the usage of case studies, frameworking, problem-based learning, classroom games, computer aided language learning, and the speech act theory.
Case studies provide a wide array of language learning opportunities for students, allowing them to practice previously learnt content as well as new vocabulary and sentence structures.
Frameworking is a method of explaining complicated concepts and processes, especially when it comes to ideas that are difficult to visualize. The frameworking model includes input, process, and output. Th input stage relates to the starting conditions. The process stage relates to what happens in the intermediate step, and the output stage relates to the result.
Problem-based learning places the teacher in the role of a facilitator, whereas students employ strategies from task based and collaborative learning to work in group and solve problems.
The Speech Act Theory is a language acquisition theory containing four levels: Utterance, Propositional Utterances, Illocutionary Utterances, and Perlocutionary Utterances. In the context of Business English, the most appropriate settings for this theory tend to be in the following areas: making requests and offers, negotiation, and questioning.
This Unit also contains examples of lesson plans relevant to each teaching theme.
