In this unit I learned about course books and materials that would be helpful in teaching lessons. These materials can be divided into two groups - authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are just about anything that a native speaker would hear or read, such as programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films, etc. Created materials are usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book. Common created materials include crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, and picture stories. I looked over examples of these materials. I then looked at information about course books and the advantages and disadvantages that go along with using them. I also learned the best usage of course books and the four different options for course book use which are omitting, replacing, supplementing, and adapting. I also learned the different ways to analyze a course book in order to provide the best options for the students and the teacher.
