Unit 2 began by explaining the varying roles of the TESOL teacher such as instructor and facilitator, and about setting personal targets and external goals to monitor your teaching skills, as well as how to treat the students. Describing learners and the different ways they acquire English including individual instruction versus group instruction. The next part of the unit focused on the pros and cons of one to one and group learning. When taking private lessons, the learner has 100% dedication and receives the most feedback while a disadvantage is that activities and games etc. are limited. With group instruction a lot of planning must be made to determine the best way to present lessons depending on if all students are on the same level or mixed levels. Following this, the 4 different features of listening, speaking, reading and writing were discussed in length with examples as listening to telephone dialogues, reading emails, writing faxes and reading business articles from the Economist, etc. The latter part of Unit 2 went on to explain different approaches and theories including learning from your native language with grammar translations, the silent way in which the learner takes a bigger role, or the audiolinguism method similar to military repetition. Another method for communicative language was explained in detail which includes the 3 stages to engage, study and activate.
