In Unit 3 I learned about designing the course, testing the students' level of English skills, designing a Syllabus and finally how to evaluate and test the students. The unit gave a 5-scale level to determine proficiency from elementary to advanced from ALTE. Next came the needs analysis when you question the student about their listening, reading, writing and speaking frequency when communicating in English with regard to meetings, customers, presentations etc. I learned how syllabus design could be based on a few different formats such as the structural, functional or situational. Unit 3 then included the steps how to build a sample syllabus for a 10 hour course which would really only include 7 lessons following the intro class, the final assessment class and one allotted class for review of potentially unclear issues. Following this, different forms of assessments were introduced including diagnostic, aptitude, progress and proficiency. Progress tests should be administered often so as to allow for time to review items the students were struggling with. Unit 3 also mentioned how it is important to give feedback as soon as possible after the tests. TESOL teachers can also improve their classes and teaching standards by asking their students to evaluate the class and their teaching by mentioning things that worked and things that did not work.
