Unit 1 highlights the complex nature of the relationship between teachers and learners, whether young or adult. First, the session outlines the characteristics of a good teacher and the range of roles that s/he needs to play in order to facilitate the learning process. Above all, the author notes that the teacher must care more about the learning experience than the teaching experience. Next, the unit focuses on learners—what motivates them, the differences between adult and young learners, and some common ways of evaluating levels of proficiency. Here the key appears to be the teacher’s perceptiveness and sensitivity to the factors that are coloring the student’s learning experience and his/her ability to frame that role and approach to address those factors. Finally, the unit outlines some reasons that students may want to learn a foreign language. Whatever the reason, the conclusion is that it is generally the teacher who defines the quality of both the learning experience— “good teachers make good students”.
