This unit highlighted the various teaching methods that have been used over the years. The Engage, Study & Activate (ESA) method has incorporated various aspects of those teaching methods and refined them along the way. For example, how classical conditioning theorised by Pavlov, is still used today in the form of repetitive drills. The three phases under ESA are all-encompassing of creative and innovative activity ideas. There are several activities that I remember participating in as a student and recently have used as a teacher myself to teach younger students in student centres. The three phases make it easy to understand the backbone of a lesson plan and to come up with concepts that flow well and are easy for students to follow as well as can be tailored to suit students with advanced language skills. I particularly like the part about correction techniques. The education system in Singapore is such that teachers are very meticulous and rigid about correcting students that they neglect the flow of the lesson, as well as the effect constant correction has on the motivation students have when it comes to learning in general. I realised that I am guilty of following in the footsteps of my teachers and have been too adamant about correcting my students and friends on occasion. This is something that I will have to make a conscious effort not to be too inflexible about. This helps highlight the appropriate time and situation to correct students and I believe this will come in very handy when dealing with students.
