Teaching has always been one of the hardest and toughest jobs ever. It needs lots of patience, understanding and energy. The teacher needs to play different roles depending on certain circumstances and that’s not easy to figure out especially for new teachers. Being able to switch between being a controller, assessor, organizer or monitor or even playing two roles at the same time can be exhausting.
However, the teacher should have good attributes on how to use voice, gestures and engage students in activities.
Moreover, the age of students can also affect the learning process as adults don’t need as much attention to push them to learn as teenagers do. A caring teacher will help students to build their motivation to learn English by making classes interesting. The teacher has an important impact on controlling students’ nervousness and setting their goal and aims clearly to learn English for instance; when the teacher teaches writing to a student who wishes to complete his degree later, she can remind the student how important is writing for him to be able to complete his studies.
Furthermore, the teacher should be aware of cultural differences that can sometimes have a reflection on the students’ behavior for example, students who come from the Middle East are usually more conservative and religious and it can be a bit hard to engage them in mixed gender activities, due to that, the teacher needs to build a friendly atmosphere in the classroom so the students feel comfortable to interact with each other.
In my opinion, being a good teacher can be challenging however, the teacher should always make sure to spread positive energy in every class and be close to the students so they can feel comfortable to open up more, express themselves freely and learn effectively.
