This unit covered the main learning and developmental theories which included: maturation theory, environmental theory, the constructivism theory and lastly the cognitive developmentalists theory. The unit then covered the difference between language acquisition and language learning. Mainly discussing that language acquisition is an unconscious process while language learning is a conscious process. Then the ESA methodology was introduced along with what each stage of this process includes and examples of what you may see in a classroom. Even though not all ESA lessons use the straight arrow approach, all lessons must begin with the 'Engage' stage and end with an 'Activate' stage. This unit also covered the learning environment of students and how it plays a role in their overall learning. Lastly, the unit covered character traits for group one students (ages five to nine) and group two students (ages nine to thirteen) and what a typical classroom may look like within these age groups and ideas of how to plan lessons to best fit the needs of these learners.
