The selection of materials and writing of class plans are essential for the success of teacher and students. However, materials and plans need to contain flexibility so that the teacher can effectively interact with students while addressing different styles of learning and differing cultural backgrounds. The exciting part of the lesson often comes when students perform in a slightly unexpected manner, or provide an unanticipated answer, or comment. To honor each student, the teacher can incorporate unexpected information into the lesson as it is happening. For example, a group of students are talking about various tasks that each member of the family performs. Perhaps one student's father always cooks dinner, and another student comments that that is strange; women should do the cooking. An open teacher could use this comment to lead into a larger discussion centering on when the students become adults, who wants to cook, why, or why not? It is important to choose materials that students react to in a positive way. Perhaps a book with many lines of text and few illustrations are less effective than a colorful book, with illustrations and subject matter in which the student has interest. A teacher finds out areas of interest by talking to students and taking into consideration preferences and interests. A teacher can be flexible in teaching while still maintaining structure, calm, and ensuring good behavior in students. The teacher often does this best by presenting interesting materials and class plans that allow students to be curious and to learn new skills.
