The choice of using or not using a course book depends on the teacher. Some teachers prefer using their own materials to using published course books. Course books can be quite beneficial to use, yet some teachers do not like using them. they prefer using materials which could be authentic or created. Authentic materials tend to be real, interesting and motivating. They help students gain confidence when they are well understood. Created materials on the other hand are designed by the teacher and therefore geared towards specific areas of study. They can be graded to the level of the students. examples are crosswords,word search puzzles, flashcards, picture stories, role-play cards, etc.
