Unit twelve focused on the productive skills which include speaking and writing. These skills are used to communicate. Many students tend to focus more on speaking than writing as it is an easier skill to master. However, it requires more fluency. Writing is still very important and often neglected in the teaching of English. I learnt the different reasons why people communicate. This will be helpful in coming up with activities for the students to do in the lesson. As a teacher, I need to instil a desire in the students to want to communicate. Examples of different activities to carry out in the lesson were also introduced and explained which will be useful when giving a lesson one day. There are some differences between speaking and writing and there are also many aspects that are the same when speaking and writing. These aspects need to be considered when preparing a lesson. An example of a creative writing activity lesson provided a solid platform from which to base my own lesson on in the future. I also learnt that many games from my childhood can be incorporated into the lesson as a way of teaching the English language in a fun and interesting way. The aspects addressed in this unit will enable me to teach a good English lesson on productive skills.
