Using authentic material in class rather than material specifically written for learners is to provide more variety and authenticity to the lesson. It also allows the teacher to tailor the content of the lesson more specifically to the class needs and interests. Authentic materials is useful for intermediate students because they already had more vocabulary and grammar knowledge and it is motivating for them to exercise their fluency. Created materials is more appealing for beginners because of its visual and colorful effects specially created by teachers. The use of course books are visually appealing, easy for the teachers to prepare and the activities fits well into timetable. But somehow using course books creates uninteresting topics, repetitive activities and inadequate language exposure. These may affect learner's attitude and motivation. The teacher need to solve the issues and problems with using course books. He/she may include finding ways to motivate students and teaching academic skills not found in these course books. The teacher should fill the gap for the areas that are not covered by the course books. Teachers may increase reading materials by encouraging students to read literature outside the classroom to gain more excellence in vocabulary and grammar.
I have learned that course books will be a great help for me as I am an inexperienced teacher but I will not use it all the time as it may bore me and make me less creative. I should be the major material needed in the classroom and course books are just supplement. As a future teacher, I should have a balance of authentic and created materials to produce effective English classroom.
