Chandler, Arizona TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covered the two types of material used in a classroom: authentic and created materials. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Authentic material, being produced for a native audience offers students the chance to interact with things they would encounter in that foreign country. It`s more interesting than simple drilling worksheets and can provide good motivation for students.
Created material is very useful when it comes to practicing certain language points as it can be geared toward the level of the students. It can also provide more of a set structure for students to practice when learning new material.
The last section talked about coursebooks, advantages, disadvantages, and ways to choose and utilize them. Course books provide structure and reduce lesson planning time, but can be a bit lacking in depth, fail to meet the needs of the students, and be too predictable and boring. Focusing too much on the text book, depending what kind, can also take away student-student interaction time and prevent them from creatively experimenting with the language.
Teachers may choose to do one or more of the following things when using a coursebook.
Omit: Take out material they feel is irrelevant or not beneficial at the time.
Replace: Insert their own material instead of using that provided.
Supplement: Use created material to further enforce or allow students more practice with a point.
Adapt: Use the material provided, but in a way fits with their teaching style and / or the learning ability of the students.
