In this unit I learned some basic history regarding teaching theory and practices and about the current most popular or preferred method for the teaching of English as a second language. Engage, Study and Activate (ESA) was presented as the best methodology, and seeing how the ESA method pulls from other methods focusing on the student and natural production of language I can understand why ESA is popular. I like the flexibility of ESA, from a straight arrow Engage, Study and Activate lesson, to boomerang and patchwork lessons the teacher is able to focus on the needs of their students and tailor their lessons accordingly. I also enjoyed learning about the different activities for the phases and how many, if not most, of the activities can be adjusted for the language level of the students. It also seems as if many of the engage and activate activities can be used interchangeably with some minor adjustment. Initially I was under the impression that there were activities for each phase and they should not be switched. There are activities that are better suited for a particular phase, such as new vocabulary focused word searches which are more suitable for a study phase.
