Unit four introduced me to the four basic skills in languages. These included: receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (writing and speaking). The focus for this unit was on reading and listening. I learnt that we read for different reasons. Our motives change depending on why we are reading or listening to a particular piece of writing. When we read or listen to a text, we must understand the words and follow their overall meaning from knowledge already developed inside of us. I learnt about the different specialist skills used when reading in order to understand the context of the text. When it comes to a new language, listening is a lot harder than seeing written text in front of a person. It’s much easier to process information that is right in front of us to read over and over again at our own pace. This as opposed to listening to words that are mostly foreign to us and at a pace that is a bit too fast to process. It was also pointed out to the students that sentence length, word length and unfamiliar words can be a challenge for the students. This problem can be addressed by pre-teaching vocabulary and paying attention to the text that is chosen for the students’ activities. All of the areas explained in this unit will be very helpful in teaching an English lesson on receptive skills.
