This unit was an overview of the two productive skills of language, writing and speaking. Both as with the two passive skills, both are equally important, but are used in different situations. For example, when speaking, you don't have much time to dot down, organize, and rearrange thoughts before having to produce the language since verbal communication is very fast paced. Therefore, fluency is the main goal. It is a bit more forgiving that writing in the fact that any mistakes and misunderstanding can be cleared up on the spot. Writing on the other hand focuses on accuracy of grammar, spelling, organization, and other facets of the language in order for the reader to understand what is trying to be communicated. Misunderstandings cannot be remedied right then an there.
There are many effective techniques and exercises to improve both skills, but as with anything, the important point is to make the topic and lesson relative to the students. How does it apply to their daily life? Can they use this language immediately after leaving class? Will knowing and using what was practiced give them a sense of accomplishment? Thinking about and being able to address these points will help one create an entertaining and effective lesson.
