This unit was based around two videos that demonstrated a lesson being taught. There was both good and bad in both videos. The first lesson was discouraging and not effective in that the teacher didn't provide good explanation in anything and also didn't engage the students. It was clear that the students were confused and intimidated by the teacher therefore not being able to ask or answer questions. There also wasn't much rapport in the beginning which made the relationship between the teacher and student much more difficult. He would give negative feedback to the students and it didn't seem helpful at all. The teacher was also unprepared and had an overall negative demeanor. It is very important that a good teacher has a great attitude and is enthusiastic and friendly to engage the students in the lesson. This lesson clearly demonstrated that it was more teacher centered than around the students.
The second video was much more effective in teaching the students. He was extremely enthusiastic and always smiling. He did a good job in the beginning of learning the students names and introducing himself. It was clear right away that the teacher was organized engaging the students with a game of fill in the blank on the board so the student could visualize it and then verbalize it when the teacher called on them. Everybody was much more active in this lesson and excited to learn. The teacher was relatable to the students and the transitions from engage to study and activate were smooth. The teacher gave a lot of positive reinforcements and clear instructions throughout. The biggest takeaways between these two lessons is having a positive attitude, don't discourage the students, make things fun & exciting to get student participation, be well prepared, be clear with instructions and try to speak slowly so students can digest what you are saying.
