This unit covered some basic information regarding teaching of groups that don't fall into the category of adults who are seeking to improve basic conversational skills. These include teaching children and business professionals.
There are different teaching methods and management techniques associated with each, children being the harder of the two to handle. They have much energy and shorter attention spans, which makes it important to create entertaining, but structured lessons. Teachers need to be clear in their instructions and make sure to always follow the same rules they set for their students. They need to be lively, encouraging, and prepared to make fun of themselves.
Teaching business people on the other hand will not require as much of a focus on discipline, but still comes with it's own set of challenges. For example teaching mix ethnic groups where the only common language is English. This can be an advantage as they will have to use English in order to communicate with each other. People from different backgrounds also bring different experiences, views, and cultures to the table which can serve as stimuli, keeping students interested and motivated. Teachers also have to take the students work schedule into account, as they may be coming to class after a full day. They may not have the energy or focus to do a full lesson, so may need to have new material reduced or in some cases totally scrapped and have the class turned into simple conversation practice. Needs analyses at the beginning of class help the teacher to decide the focus of the following lessons, students aims and goals for the class, what they feel are their strong and weak points, etc.
Regardless of the level or type of group teachers instruct, they must set out clear goals and cater their style to the attitudes and desires of the students.
