I learned in Unit 4 the present tenses and the different aspects of it which are simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. The lesson discussed the form, usages, typical student errors and teaching ideas. The first part was present simple form. This form is used to express a state or condition, universal truth or habitual actions. Simple present has different forms such as affirmative , negative and questions. Other indicators of this form are adverbs such as always, normally, often and everyday. The next part went over present continuous form. This tense uses words like "is" and "are" which are used as helping verbs. This tense helps indicate an activity of some duration which is taking place at this moment. It also helps signify habitual activity that is tedious or repetitive. It can also indicate a definite arrangement in the near future. In the present continuous tense the "ing" form of the main verb is always used. Again like before it uses affirmative, negative and question forms. This section also gave some good teaching ideas such as pictures of actions, pictionary for students, noises and time zones. The next section went over the present perfect tense. This tense tells us number one that an action has been completed. Number two, that an action has begun in the past and continued up to the moment. Number three, that an action has taken place in the past but the time is not given and not definite. Lastly, when we describe past actions with present results. In present perfect form the helping verbs like have/has are used. Some teaching ideas from this lesson were having students write a list and finding someone who has kissed a foreigner or who has been on television. The last section was on the present perfect continuous tense. This tense relates past activities to the present. This tense is used frequently for a recent activity. It is also a repeated action in the simple present perfect which can sometimes express as a continuous action by the present perfect continuous. For example I have eaten two sandwiches since lunchtime. The perfect continuous tense uses the verb have/has and is followed by "been" and "ing." A good teaching idea from this section was having students survey the class to find out who has been doing something the longest.
