A SUMMARY ON UNIT 12 - TEACHING PRODUCTIVE SKILLS
Productive skill consist of two equally important skills which speaking and writing. The major difference between
the two is that speaking requires a greater degree of fluency while writing requires a higher level of accuracy.
The fluency activities are usually incorporated in activate phase of the lesson while the accuracy based activities
are done in the study phase of the lesson as they check whether students understand and can use the language correctly
so the teacher needs to correct where necessary to ensure accuracy.
Acurracy based activities include:
1.Drilling
2.Prompting
3.Model dialogues
4.Guided role play
Fluency based activities include:
1.Free role play
2.Discussions
3.Communication games
4.Debates
When two people are communicating they are doing so for one or more of the following reasons,theres purpose ,they
want to say or listen to something or they are just interested .So as a teacher in order to encourage students to
speak its important consider the aformentioned factors.
There are various reasons why student may fail to speak this could be due to lack of confidence ,cultural
difference ,being intimated by other students etc.Therefore to encourage student interaction always incorporate pair or group work
careful planning, plenty of controlled and guided practice before the activities to ensure that students are comfortable and are confident
to speak.
