This unit covered management in the classroom. There are various ways to change the atmosphere of the class and make it feel more comfortable, conducive to learning, and help build rapport between students and teachers. There are many factors to consider when doing this, such as class size, ages, personality, motivation, objective of lesson, etc. Each has their own pros and cons, such as allowing students more talking time and a more comfortable atmosphere (group / pair) or making it easier to lecture and keep the class disciplined (rows). The teacher must also gauge their position and what role they should assume during an activity. Whether they should be active and interact with the students, or whether they should stand back and allow the students to talk and flow with the conversation.
A teacher`s voice, gestures, and various other actions also plays a role in engaging and disciplining a class. Varying your tone and using a lot of gestures / being active can help to invigorate the students. Being well prepared and punctual also helps to establish a rhythm and keep your students focused. There are also various ways to discipline a class, but one should never raise one`s voice and shout as it almost never helps the situation. A good teacher must also look into and understand the reason for the misbehaving as there are many factors that can influence this aspect than may be apparent at first glance.
