This unit covered the parts of speech which denote the function of each word in a sentence. The parts of speech are: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, articles, gerunds, conjunctions, infinitives, and prepositions.
Nouns are a person, place, or thing. There are several types of nouns such as countable (ex: eggs), uncoutable (ex: magic), proper (ex: Ireland), collective (ex: family), compound (ex: lifeboat) and common (ex: brother).
Verbs are the action in the sentence and describe what the subject is doing. There are action verbs (ex: eats) and state verbs (ex: seem). There are also auxiliary verbs which are not the main verb but help in a sentence (Do I have more time?). There are also both transitive and intransitive verbs. A transitive verb can be followed but a direct object (I invited Paul to the party). An intransitive verb cannot be directly followed by and object (He arrived). This unit also described the various verb forms (base, past simple, past part., present part.)
Adjectives describe a noun. (The wobbly chair). There are both comparative adjectives and superlative adjectives. Comparative adjectives compare two nouns and often end in -er (I am taller than her). Comparative adjectives describe three or more nouns and often end in -est (I am the tallest in my class).
Adverbs describe a verb (She ate slowly). There are adverbs of manner (well, hard), place (here, up), time (now, then), frequency (often, once) and degree (very, really).
Pronouns take the place of a noun (she, I, his) There are personal pronouns (I, she, we), reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself), relative (where, who), and possessive pronouns (his, hers, ours) These are different from adjectives in that the possessive adjective describes the noun and the pronoun takes the place of a noun (This is my house vs. The house is mine)
Articles precede a noun and specify it. An indefinite article is used for general singular nouns (a hog, an apple) A definite article is used for a specific noun (the daisy). There are also zero articles which are used for general ideas (Coffee gives me a headache).
Gerunds are verbs ending in -ing that are used as the noun in the sentence (Running makes me tired)
Conjunctions join words or groups of words/ideas in a sentence (I like spaghetti and wine., I like to eat burgers, but I know that I have to work out afterwards.).
Infinitives are the base form of a verb preceded by "to" (to drive, to dance, to go).
Prepositions show the relationship between the noun or pronoun and the rest of the sentence (in, around, above, for, etc)
I learned that there is a lot to cover and that there are a lot of irregularities and exceptions to the English language that my students and I will have to work through.
