There are four essential skills when learning any language, which can be divided into receptive skills and productive skills. This unit focused on receptive skills, reading and listening. Both are important to be able to do, but it should make sense that reading will be a bit easier since the student make take their time deciphering text, while listening can only be heard once and requires real time understanding. Reading and listening are done for two broad reasons: for a purpose to gain information, or for entertainment. It is not uncommon that reading and listening can be done for both. There are a different methods of skills that people use depending on the circumstances and what the reader/listener wants to out of it. More commonly, reading will be find specific information or to get the gist of a text; however, sometimes it is necessary to gain the full detail of a text, and also be able to deduce vocabulary from the context it is being used in. If the material is not interesting to the students, it will be less likely that they get engaged by the lesson. A teacher should get to know their student to better choose appropriate content to appeal to their interest, but it is a must to use a variety of topics, since as individual, they will have their own individual interests, and the teach must cater to all their students. Lastly, to check for comprehension, it is better to create tasks that will require compression using receptive skills. This is better than just simply checking for comprehension.
