This unit talks about the different methodologies and techniques teachers use to effectively teach English. I have learned that there is no one method or technique out of the rest, that can produce the best results. Different methods work for different individuals and the effectivity of the method depends on individual circumstances where the teacher's personality and the students' culture and needs are largely at play. It is important then to keep in mind the conclusions drawn from looking at these methodologies, as stated in this unit. Some of these conclusions are as follows: that students need as much exposure to language as possible, they need a certain amount of input from the teacher, communicative tasks offer real learning possibilities but are not enough on their own, anxiety and stress need to be low for effective language learning and that students should be encouraged to discover language for themselves, where possible.
Jeremy Harmer's ESA approach, according to this unit, is particularly appropriate for trainee and new teachers, and this applies to me. I am glad that this course is focusing on this methodology as it seems to be most effective and logical.
