This unit discussed the use of lesson materials and course books in the classroom. First, there was a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of using authentic (i.e. magazine, newspaper, menu, etc) and created (i.e. crosswords, word search, flashcards, etc.) materials. While authentic materials can give students confidence in the language and can often be geared towards their interests, they are not suitable for excessive use with lower level students.
Next, this unit talked about the advantages and disadvantages of using a course book in the classroom. The advantages include the fact that course books provide a tried and tested syllabus, continuity, a balanced mix of skills and are very useful for inexperienced. However, they should not be relied on too heavily as they are not always geared towards the needs of your students and can also take away teacher creativity in the lesson. The best way to use a course book is to omit, replace, supplement and adapt the necessary sections for your specific students. A section was also included about important factors to consider when analyzing a course book for your class.
I'm happy to read that flexibility is encouraged here instead of stating that the course book needs to be followed to the T. I know this is also subjective to a certain school's desires and curriculum as well, but it's good to know that some flexibility can be allowed and even encouraged.
