In teaching a new language, lessons can be classified broadly into three types depending on the kind of material being taught. These are Vocabulary, Grammar/ Language Structure, and Language Function. When the lesson is on vocabulary, vocabulary words should be carefully chosen to be useful; however, its less obvious which order words should be taught, and it could be debated when it is the right timing to introduce certain words. A Straight Arrow ESA lesson are useful for this since teaching vocabulary is more straight forward compared to teaching language structure. Grammar is usually more clear which order it should be taught depending on the language level of the student. It is better here to use a Boomerang ESA lesson structure to allow students to attempt to use their already known grammar to attempt to communicate, and then teach what a more appropriate/efficient way to communicate. Lastly, there is language function, which pertains to how specific verbal interactions are made in English. This would include inviting, suggesting, accepting, ordering, ect. Boomerang and Patchwork lesson structures are good for these lessons, where role-plays are a bread and butter for the activate phase. It should be noted that there is no set lesson structure for each of these type of lessons, and the once suggested here are not meant to be a guideline, not strict rules.
