This unit covered the two productive skills: speaking and writing. Both are used to communicate and are equally important in the learning of the language. Speaking skills concern both accuracy and fluency. Again, both are equally important but are used in different parts of the lesson (i.e. accuracy more in the Study phase and fluency in Activate). There are three different types of activities: controlled, guided, and creative. Each is more geared towards accuracy or fluency, have different control centers (teacher or student) and have different activities that belong to each one. This section also talks about why students are hesitant to speak and ways to encourage such students to participate. Writing skills contain a lot of elements (spelling, layout, punctuation, handwriting, etc.) and this lesson explains the potential troubles students may have with each particularly if they come from countries whose native language and alphabet is radically different from English. This lesson also talked about how creative writing could be used to practice and grow the students' knowledge of the language. A section about playing games was also included. I am happy to learn that games can be used for teaching all ages (not just adolescents). I think games are an excellent way to both expand a student's learning and create a fun and relaxing, no-pressure atmosphere for students to be able to practice their new language. It was always my favorite part during my Spanish language learning experience (and oftentimes the most effective).
