Unit 20 goes over common issues that teachers come across during their English teaching careers. It starts off with how a first lesson should be taught, and emphasizes that building rapport between the teacher and students and amongst the student is the most beneficial. Of course, its is also important to use a 'need analysis' or some method of to diagnose they English level of individual students, but to improve the flow of the class for the future lessons is done by first building rapport to make students comfortable. It is also a good idea to use warmers such as games to motivate the class to learn English. It is not uncommon to have classes that have different levels of students, despite the school you work at uses a placement exam. Usually teachers will treat this by pairing up weak students with strong students, using different materials with the two groups of students, or other techniques. Even if a teacher knows the students native language, a teacher should only respond in English and encourage only the use of English. Usually students will not use their native language out of spite, but it is still the teacher's responsibility to reinforce minimal use of their native language. Some students may be reluctant to participate, and there are ways to cater to students to make they more likely to participate, e.g. assigning pair work will allow reluctant students to participate without a lot of pressure. Finally, many teachers avoid listening texts because they are challenging for teacher, but teachers shouldn't since they practice a very necessary listening skill.
