This unit discusses the qualities that make up both a good learner and a good teacher.
Good teachers, among many other qualities, are fair, able to motivate their students, and really have a passion for teaching. A teacher can take on several roles in the classroom. For example, a teacher is a model who gives examples for the class to follow. A teacher can also be an assessor who is able to give both positive and constructive feedback to their students.
A good learner, along with several other qualities, has a desire to listen, asks questions, and is willing to accept and learn from errors. There are several ways to categorize learners. One is by their age as there are Young Learners (who can be broken up into three groups: 2-7, 8-13, and 14-18) and Adult Learners. Each group has its own levels of experience, motivation and behavior. For example, an older YL's motivation may be forced as they often "have" to be there whereas ALs often choose to be at the lesson for economic reasons.
Learners can also be categorized by their language level. The levels begin at Beginner, then move up to Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, and Advanced.
Learners have a variety of reasons for studying English. These examples can range anywhere from a move to an English speaking country to simply a love of languages.
