In this unit, I have learned about the most effective methods for teaching a new language. One of the most effective methods is the ESA structure for teaching. This method exposes a student to a new language as well as motivates them to use it. In addition, the instructor is given more freedom within the creation of their lesson plan. In this unit, a number of examples are provided on how to engage the students which should always be at the beginning of class. One such as example would be to show a picture of an animal and encourage the class to use vocabulary to describe the animal. In the study phase, it is appropriate to explain then hand out worksheets on new vocabulary and grammar. Once the students has absorbed information through the process of the 'study' phase, it is the time for the 'activate' part of the lesson. In the 'activate' part of the lesson, students are encouraged to do an activity that engages and incorporates new language. An activity such as Partner Information Share is a great way to incorporate newly learned language. In this activity the class divides into pairs and collects information about one another then reports that information back to the class. This lesson plan is referred to as the Straight Arrow approach, where the teacher plans the lesson in the following order; Engage, Study, Activate.
