This unit covered the various things teachers need to know about teaching a new language, specifically about teaching vocabulary, grammar, and language functions.
In regards to selecting vocabulary, teachers need to be aware of the words' appropriacy to the students and task, the frequency and coverage of the word, and the teachability of the class. Students need to know a word's meaning, uses, function in a sentence, interaction, spelling and pronunciation. The lesson then described a typical vocab lesson.
When teaching grammar, the students will need to learn the meaning, uses, forms and patterns and the spoken vs. written forms and their differences. Again, a typical lesson for this topic was laid out.
Teaching language functions includes inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting and more. Activation is particularly important for this topic. Boomerang and Patchwork were said to be best, and a typical lesson was described.
It's interesting to think about what different kinds of lessons are best for teaching different sections of the language (i.e. straight arrow vs. patchwork vs. boomerang best for vocab vs. grammar vs. function).
