Since feedback is important to students to help them improve, it is important to understand the different types of examination. For starters, a placement exam can be taken to determine the level of students' prior to starting class, to determine which class they should be entering. Next, a diagnostic exam can be implemented at the beginning of a course, so that the teacher can plan out their lessons accordingly to students needs. An evaluation at the beginning is just a starting point and there should be more progress exams throughout the whole semester; however, these should be less formal, used to periodically check what students retained, and what skills still need more work. Although dreaded, schools will almost always require student to take a standardize test, usually as a final evaluation. These are usually not enjoyed by teachers because they give incentive to memorize material instead of understanding, and a students' ability are not justly determined by a standardized test. Nonetheless, teacher should prepare students for these exams, usually through the means of a practice test. Finally, there are external test that give people certifications for their English level. There are some that simply evaluate and give the students a score, and others that check if the test takers' skill are suitable for everyday life, learning in English, or using English in the work place. Teachers can also use practice test for external exam if it is in the interest of the whole class.
