Course material is another topic in teaching that is highly debated on how it should be balanced. Rule of thumb: the teacher's creativity should always be used along side with material to create the most interesting learning experience. Materials can be categorized as authentic and created. Authentic material is anything that native speakers would read or listen to, which provides the advantage of being realistic. This in turn creates confidence in students; however, since it is not intended to be used to teach, material that is not carefully chosen may be too advanced for students which will lower confidence instead. How advance the material is also depends on how the material is used, meaning the same material can used for higher level or lower level students. Created material is content that is designed with the intent of teaching. This is more flexible material since it can be changed to accommodate all level of students, and will most likely be the majority of the material used. On a last note, course books are usually used for classes, but should be utilized using critical consideration. Usually course work books are design for a general audience, so they may be more developed for teaching, but they ignore the students' interests completely. Teachers should not blindly assign course book assignment, and it is not uncommon to adapt the books and pair it up with other activities.
