The unit talks about two of the four basic skills in any language, reading and listening, also known as receptive skills. It tells us that we need more than our eyes and our ears for effective reading and listening. We need our minds to be able to recognise and and understand the words and also grasp their overall meaning from pre-existing knowledge of the world. We are shown a number of specialist skills needed to understand the context of what we are reading or listening to. There are a lot of different aspects to consider in teaching receptive skills.
