The first part of this unit covers modal auxiliary verbs, which are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb, for example, if we want to stress an obligation we have we say “I really must go home now, my parents are waiting”. There are lots of other auxiliary verbs we can use, such as, may, might, need to, have to, should, can and more. A teaching idea for this section would be to have the students come up with rules for a hotel. Active and passive voice was also covered which showed how to place emphasis on something other than the doer in a sentence.
Non-defining and defining clauses were also discussed where non-defining is information about the subject that can be taken out and still be a complete sentence. Phrasal verbs was a section I think the students will have some difficulty with if not practices due to plain confusion of verb and participle placement. The trick is to get them comfortable using words like speed up, catch up with, look out for etc.
