Burlingame, California TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit discussed teaching reading and listening, which are also known as receptive skills. There are many reasons why English learners will need to learn receptive skills. The first reason can be for a purpose, which helps an English learner complete a particular aim or goal. This can involve reading instructions for a task or understanding directions to get to a certain location. There is also having receptive skills for an entertainment purpose. A student may want to be able to listen to an artist or read a book in the English language. Being able to do so is an assessment for having great receptive skills.
We do not just use our eyes and earns to read and listen. As humans, we also have to use our minds to understand the words and process how they make sense in the context that they are being used. Having good receptive skills will translate into necessary sub skills: predictive, scanning, and skimming as well as understanding detailed information and using deductive reasoning.
There are a few factors that teachers will need to consider with teaching reading and listening. Sentence length, word length, unfamiliar words all play a factor when it comes to this. The advantage to reading, though, is that it is somewhat immortalized. Students have the ability to read and think about the word countless times. The teacher can also perform other tasks to make facilitating language easier such as pre-teaching difficult vocabulary before an activity and carefully selecting text. It is also important for the teacher to keep the topics in mind that will generate interest with the students. The unit then goes into further detail by providing worksheets that would be interesting for the student.
