The final unit focuses on troubleshooting and thankfully gives suggestions on first lessons. With the first lesson, the teacher will either be faced with a new group or existing group. Both come with their advantages and disadvantages, but it is important to use activities and not the coursebook during the first lesson. The teacher should establish rapport, learn about the students' needs and aspirations, and discover the English level of each individual student. There are many ways this can be accomplished. The teacher can use a questionnaire/survey, a "pass the ball" game, or even a needs analysis that was discussed in the previous chapter. Some good ways to warm up the class include hangman, Pictionary, tongue twisters, and memory games.
When tackling a new class, there will be many different levels of students within that class. A was to make this work is to use different materials. The teacher may need to split the class into weaker and stronger students, or the teacher could use the same materials but give different tasks. The teacher can also pair stronger students with weaker students. A new class may also be very large, which can make classroom management very difficult. Some suggest activities include worksheets, group work, choral drilling, and even possibly appointing very developed students to be group leaders.
Students may use their native language for a variety of reasons. Perhaps they are unable to express themselves fully in English or maybe they are trying to help out another student. As teachers, we need our classroom to be strictly only English. It is important to make sure the chosen activities are at an appropriate level and that all explanations are spoken slowly and clearly. The teacher will always need to respond in English and be very encouraging. This can also help with encouraging reluctant students. Other activities for reluctant students may include pair work, controlled practice, and role play.
This is the last unit of the coursework, and I have learned a lot of information! Even though I am a teacher, this course has helped me see things in a different perspective, and I am thankful for that.
