This unit's focus was on future tenses. The four tenses discussed were.future simple, future continuous, future perfect, future perfect continuous. There was also a fifth tense known as the "going to" future tense. This unit also discussed how similar the future tenses can be to some forms of the present tense.
Future simple is used to state future facts/certainties, promises, predictions, assumptions, spontaneous decisions, and threats. The format for this is subject + will + verb. For English learners, there may be some confusion between the "be going to" and the future simple tense. Another difficulty students may face are the contractions of the subject + will to form a "'ll" after the subject. This will be the case for all of the future tenses.
Future continuous follows the format: subject + will + be + present participle verb. It is used to express something that will be in progress at a particular future time, predict the present, and to refer to future events that are already decided. Students may not have grasped the concept behind the word "will" yet, and it may cause some confusion with using the proper verb tense.
Future perfect states things that will be completed by a certain time in the future. It follows the will + have + past participle format. Students may combine the word "will" with a "to be" verb and past participle, which may cause incorrect sentence structure.
Future perfect continuous follows the format: will + have + been + (verb +ing). It demonstrates how long something will have continued by a certain time. The final future tense discussed is the "going to" future. It is used to express intentions, predictions based on present evidence, and decisions made before speaking. This tense is different from the rest because it uses a "to be" verb in the present.
