In this unit I learned that in English the present tense is separated into four. The present simple, the present continuous, the present perfect and the present perfect continuous tense. I equally learned how to form each four in the affirmative, negative and interrogative. What really was interesting was to study the different uses of each tense. The present tense is used for habits, routines, facts. Whereas the present continuous is used for actions in progress at the time of speaking, or around the time of speaking. The present perfect on the other hand is used to relate something in the past to the present and is often used when relating past experiences. For example, I have visited America. It is equally used when past actions have consequences in the present – I have lost my keys. Finally, the present perfect continuous is used for actions that started in the past and are continuing up until the present time for example, I have been working for three hours. The focus in the continuous tenses is on the actions. There are also certain verbs that cannot be used in continuous tenses such as like, understand etc.
