There are 4 main skills in language learning; reading, writing, listening and speaking. These 4 can be broken down into 2 categories; receptive which are reading and listening and productive which are speaking and writing. Both receptive and productive skills are equally important in language learning. There are many potential problems in teaching reading and listening such as keeping student interest, finding material that is at the appropriate learning level and giving students confidence to keep going even when they don't understand every word.
