Unit 2 focuses on the different types of speech in the English language: articles, adjectives, nouns, verbs, prepositions, and many variations of the types. With nouns, there are common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective types. There are also countable nouns (which are nouns that can be proceeded by an article) and uncountable nouns that cannot have the articles "a" or "an" in front of them. There are pronouns that are used in place of more precise nouns or phrases.
Adjectives are used to describe nouns. There are comparative adjectives that compare two nouns. Comparative adjectives typically have "er" or "ier" attached to the end, except in the case that that the adjective is three syllables. If this is the case, the word "most" is placed in front of the adjective with no alterations. There are some irregular comparative adjectives such as "good," "better," and "best," as well as "bad," "worse," and "worst."
Articles can be separated into two categories: definite and indefinite. Definite articles use the word "the" while indefinite articles us "a" and "an," "A" is used with a singular noun that begins with a consonant or a word that begins with a consonant sound. "An" is used when there is a singular noun that begins with a vowel. There are a few irregular situations where you should and should not use there articles.
Verbs are used to express an noun's action or state of being. There are two types of verbs, transitive and intransitive. A transitive verb is a verb that is followed directly by an object. An intransitive verb cannot be followed by an object. Examples of this are "go," "arrive," and depart." Verbs have these types of forms: base, past simple, past participle, and present participle. A gerund is a form of a verb that ends in "-ing." It is a form of a verb that can be used as a noun. Adverbs are used to describe verbs to go into further detail.
This unit was helpful in understanding the parts of speech. Understanding the pieces that make up a sentence in the English language will help teach students of a foreign language.
