This unit covers modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. Modals are used to express obligation, permission, probability, possibility, advice, ability and prohibition. Modals verbs are followed by a verb in its base form. When using modals it's important to know what kind of expression you want to express. For example, if you are being polite you should say "May I take this pen?", if its more casual, maybe talking to a friend, you may say "Can I take this pen?". It's important that the students know these differences when they are interacting with someone be there writing or speaking. In the active voice the focus is on the agent while in the passive voice it may not even be present.Now about phrasal verbs, there are three types: intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable. The intransitive can't be followed by a direct object. The transitive separable can only come between the verb and the particle while the inseparable come after the particle.
